Are Aircraft Black Boxes Really Black?

The black box of the aircraft is really NOT black but it is actually painted ORANGE to enhance its visibility at the site of the crash.

By the way, the function of the black box is to help investigators discover the cause of a crash. Passenger aircraft carry two black boxes; one contains the flight data recorder which records the aircraft's speed, direction, altitude, etc. during the flight, and the other contains the cockpit voice recorder which records all that is said in the cockpit by the pilots, other crew, or intruders. Each recorder is packed separately within crash proof, fireproof metal shell.

Question still remains, if the boxes are painted Orange they why should they be call Black Boxes?

In American industry, any device not essential to the functioning of a system is called as black box irrespective of its colour. The black boxes in an aircraft plays no part in making an aircraft fly, hence it has this misleading name, "Black Box".

RE: Are Aircraft Black Boxes Really Black?

The post by pvmunshi is very informative. I would just like to extend this informative article by adding -

The Black Box (flight recorder) was invented by David Warren.

RE: Are Aircraft Black Boxes Really Black?

True the Black Box isn't black and the origin of the term "Black Box" is uncertain. One explanation suggests that the early film-based design of flight data recorders, which required the inside of the recorder to be perfectly dark to prevent light leaks from corrupting the record, as in a photographer's darkroom, gave the box it's name.Another explanation of the "black box" name came from a meeting about Warren's "Red Egg", when afterwards a journalist told Dr. Warren, "This is a wonderful black box."

Opting for an IT Certification is a smart decision.
