Robotics is a technology related to the design, manufacture and application of robots in the various fields - day-to-day life or scientific exploration or industrial processes. Robots are those mechanical devices that are controlled by computer programs.

Robotics being an inter-disciplinary course, students who have completed their graduation in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, instrumentation engineering or computer engineering, with an interest in robotics and artificial intelligence can pursue a course in robotics.

However here, robotic surgeon can be a good career option for those who have completed/are completing their MBBS. Robotic surgery is the most Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). It is typically performed through small (fingertip size) incisions. The surgery is done by a surgeon using a robotic surgical system called Da Vinci. This system replicates the surgeon's movements in real time. Thus the robots serves as an instrument for the surgeon. However, the Da Vinci system can neither be programmed, not can it make decisions on its own to move in any way or perform any type of surgical maneuver without the surgeon's control.

Anyone who wants to become a robotic surgeon needs to complete Masters in Surgery and should develop proficiency in open surgery and then he/she can go for training in robotic surgery.

ICRS (International Centre for Robotic Surgery, New Delhi) aims to create a talent pool of doctors in India and thus the world renowned experts of the ICRS team would train local Indian surgeons to achieve expertise and skill in this highly elegant and evolved procedure.

RE: Career as Robotic Surgeon ?

During robotic surgery, surgeons operate four robotic arms via the console, which allows them to use miniature EndoWrist surgical instruments in the 1-centimeter incisions made in the patient. The da Vinci control console allows the surgeon to see the surgical field in enhanced detail as a result of the three-dimensional (3-D) images transmitted from the laparoscopic cameras. The surgeon manipulates the robotic "hands" in real-time using master controls. The instruments are designed with seven degrees of motion that mimic and in some instances expand upon the dexterity of the human wrist. Because small incisions are used instead of more traditional, larger incisions, patients can experience a faster recovery time from surgery, as well as a lowered risk of infection or other complications and the possibility of better outcomes.
