CBSE To Introduce Theatre Studies in Class XIAccording to a letter written by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to the various school principals, standard XI students will be able to take Theatre Studies as an elective subject from the current academic session. The Central Board has invited interests from the schools to introduce the elective subject as pilot course and will be granted permission on first-come-first-serve basis.

The subject with 100 marks, split as 70 marks towards theory and 30 towards case-study based project, will consist of study in different dramatic forms & styles, theatre architecture, history of Indian theatre, Indian folk & street theatre, Japanese/Chinese/Indonesian theatre, Greek/Roman/Elizabethan/Italian theatre and links between Indian theatre and cinema.

Students have the opportunity to study works of wide spectrum of Indian theatre personalities from different languages and cultural backgrounds, likes of – Vijay Tendulkar, Mohan Rakesh, Dharmaveer Bharti, Badal Sarkar, Shankar Shesh, Girish Karnad, Chandrashekhar Kambar, Ravindranath Tagore and Bhartendu Harishchandra.

The letter sent to the schools says, “Theatre can play an important role in reinforcing and furthering the learning of other academic subjects which are taught in conventional ways,” which reflects the philosophy behind the CBSE’s purpose to introduce this course.
