Delhi University New 4 Year Degree CoursesDelhi University is introducing 4-year undergraduate degree programs in different subject from the ensuing academic session 2013-14. There has been some curiosity about these degree courses and a section of students, parents and faculties as well are opposing it, despite the fact that the stage is all set for its launching. Here are some of the aspects of this new degree, probably being introduced in India for the first.

The purpose introducing the 4-year degree course is to bring the degrees awarded by Delhi University to be at par with certain internationally acclaimed degree programs, for the bright students. However the less capable students are not to be left unqualified with the facility of multiple exit system that is part of this new degree course.

A student may leave the studies after 2 years with an award of ‘Associate Baccalaureate’ and those who would like to continue in third year and stop will leave with title of ‘Baccalaureate’. However those who choose to complete the 4-year program would be awarded with ‘Baccalaureate with honours’, according to the scheme.

There are some differences apart from newly introduced semester pattern. No student will be declared fail and exit criteria for 2nd and 3rd year will be minimum of 40% aggregate score. Minimum required aggregate will be 50% for 4 year degree, according to the scheme. The student will be promoted to the next semester if a student is not able to clear a subject where he may reappear in the subject to clear it.

The new scheme will come with an internal assessment component of 15 marks to be assigned for presentation, which could be in the form of a project, or presentation in group. Other students will be expected to participate in class and cross-question . Every student’s participation will be monitored and marks given accordingly. The internal assessment will cater to and evaluate both the communication skills as well as the writing skills. This will replace the old system of internal assessment of 25 marks which had three components – class tests (10), assignments (10) and attendance (5).
