Delhi University (DU) is all set to launch its meta-college / meta-university concept and introduce the first course under it from August. The Academic Council (AC) — the highest decision making statutory body in DU academics — on Saturday approved the concept in an emergency meeting.
Meta-College or Meta-University is a concept which allows a student to pursue two university courses simultaneously in different universities / institutions. For example, an IIT Kanpur student may also enroll in the Ancient History course in Jawaharlal Nehru University or a mathematics student from Indian Institute of Science can pursue a course in comparative literature from Jadavpur University, concurrently.
The approval has paved the way for DU to launch a master’s program in mathematics education jointly with Jamia Millia Islamia. The AC also approved credit transfer, which will allow DU to accept and transfer credit for students under the meta-university.
While the BTech in humanities under the meta-college will start from August 15, its admission process from Monday, 22 July 2012. Under BTech in humanities, students can select subject options from the existing courses in any DU college. These will comprise 50% of the course while the rest will be specialization in media studies, art and design, historical tourism, education and counselling, among others. Students admitted to various colleges this year are eligible to apply for this course offered by the Cluster Innovation Centre.
The master’s course in mathematics education to be offered jointly with Jamia Millia Islamia, which has in principle accorded the approval, is also expected to be ready to launch it by Aug 15.
