Aspiring candidates from IITs and other central institutes like NITs and IIITs will have to appear in a new format of entrance test which will also take class XII board results into consideration, from the year 2013.

The announcement was made on Monday 28th May by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal after chairing a meeting of the joint councils of IITs, NITs and IIITs. Kapil Sibal while accepting that the IIT senate, especially the faculty federation had been opposing the new format said that the selection of the candidates for IITs and other central institutes (NITs) would be different even as all the aspirants will have to go through all the steps under new format. This system will replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE from the academic year beginning in 2013.

Students will have to appear for a main test and an advanced test on the same day. There will be two merit lists prepared – one for IITs and other for NITs (Centrally Funded Institutes). Also class XII marks will be standardized on percentile basis by a formula worked out by the Indian Statistical Institute.

Admission to the Centrally Funded Institutes would consider 40 percentage weight for performance in class XII, 30 percentage weight to performance in main and 30 percentage weight in advanced test.

IITs would implement a filtering process, with only top 50,000 students to be selected for advanced test after taking into account their performance in the board results and main entrance test with 50 percentage weightage to each. Further merit only in the advanced test will be considered for the admission to IITs.

Despite the difference in the selection process and criteria between IITs and Central Funded Institutes, the counseling will be done jointly and allotment of the seats done together. So a student getting a rank in IIT and also for NIT and IIIT, will be eligible to get the seat according to preference given by the student. The nature and modalities of the entrance exams shall be determined by Joint Admission Board (JAB) of IITs while CBSE will provide the administrative support for conducting the exam.

However it was clarified by Sibal that the IITs still have some reservations about the new system and they may shift to other system by 2015.
