Maharashtra Govt Waives NET/SET For TeachersIn a major relief for college teachers, appointed from 1991 to 2000 and who could not clear National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET), the Government of Maharashtra waived this very basic eligibility norm for them and further decided to regularise their services. There are about 2307 teachers who stand to benefit from the decision. Despite giving ample opportunity and relaxation the teachers were unable to pass any of the two basic eligibility tests for lectureship as prescribed by University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Government has also decided to release Rs.1500 crore arrears of 45,000 college teachers in phase-wise manner. Out of Rs.2000 crore arrears, the state share of Rs.500 crores has been disbursed and Rs.1500 crore is due from the Centre. The arrears will be disbursed in April, June and December.

Announcing these decisions, State Higher and Technical Education Minister, Rajesh Tope, urged the college teachers to withdraw their ongoing strike as their major demands have been met. He warned teachers to deduct salary if they don’t return to work as per “No work no pay” rule. Besides the Government will not hesitate to invoking ESMA against them, he said.

The Junior and Senior college teachers have been on strike boycotting examination related work.
