NITs To Hike Tuition Fees From 2014Following a recommendation of a standing committee, the NIT council which met on Friday under the chairmanship of Higher Education Secretary Ashok Thakur in the absence of HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju, decided to approve 100% rise in the tuition fees of B.Tech, M.Tech and MCA programs in National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The new fees amounting to Rs.70,000 will be applicable from the academic session starting June, 2014. However the announcement further said that the students from SC and ST categories will not be affected by the fees hike.

The NIT Council meet also deliberated upon pairing of NITs to IITs, institutional reviews and greater financial autonomy. While the council agreed the NIT system needs to be revamped, emphasis was laid on development of curriculum and greater industry-institute interface for R&D.

There are at present 30 NITs in the country, of which 10 have been set up in recent years. According to the sources, new NITs were vocal about the issue of land, fearing that any delay in acquiring them could pose big challenge for these institutes. NIT Goa and NIT Sikkim were the worst hit because of the land problem, sources said.

It could be recalled that IITs also earlier this year raised tuition fees for their undergraduate programs from Rs.50,000 to Rs.90,000.
