The HRD Minister’s announcement on 28th May to hold common entrance test for undergraduate programs in IITs under the new format (JEE-main & JEE-advanced) does not seem to be acceptable to IIT Faculty Federation. The Federation alleged that the new pattern will erode the autonomy of the elite institutions. The President of the Federation, Sanjeev Sanghi,  informed that he has written a letter in this regard to PM on behalf of the IIT Faculty Federation. Sanghi also expressed the displeasure over the rejection of their request to launch to launch the exam from 2014 instead of 2013.

“This will create a big problem because the IITs will be left with no time to conduct a dry run to assess the new format”, Sanghi said.

The HRD Ministry, on 28th of May, had announced new format for the IIT entrance under which the plus two Board results of the candidates will also be taken into consideration. Under the prescribed format, for admission to all Centrally-Funded Institutions (NITs) there would be 40% weightage for performance in Class XII (after normalization of marks) 30% weightage to performance in JEE-main and 30% in the JEE-Advanced test. In case of IITs, there would be a filtering process involved. The Board results and the main test will be given 50% weightage each. Only the top 50,000 students will be selected for the advance test after taking into account their performance in the Board results and the JEE-main results.
